For many years I have had a saying that I have shared with my family and friends. It is:

Two events in the recent past have given timely meaning to the above saying.

1. In a seminar that I attended at AT&T in 1995, a high level executive of AT&T interrupted the seminar to announce to the world that AT&T had just broken up into three smaller companies to better serve their customers needs. It was explained to us that AT&T had grown too big and too diversified and was not focusing on the needs of its customers. They needed to get smaller to focus on relationship selling the basic point which they had tended to overlook as they grew.
   
   Having always run our business where relationship selling and the needs of our customer were paramount, I felt we had stood still long enough and were beginning to look a little bit smart.
   
   
2. In 1995, the make up of the closed cell industry changed significantly. Specifically manufacturers of closed cell were bought and put under the umbrella of one large manufacturer. This event has its business advantages but also its business problems.
   
   Being a relatively small manufacturer has allowed Monmouth to offer to our customers the focus and involvement not easily delivered by a large corporation. Again by standing still we felt that this focus on relationship selling was allowing us to look a little smart.
